New Pots Winter 2025

Inlay and Sgraffito

Inlay is a technique where a pattern is etched in the surface of the pot which is then filled with a clay of a contrasting color. With sgraffito, the contrasting color is laid on first and the pattern scratched through it to reveal the clay underneath.

Banded Pottery

A group of pots, mostly bowls but sometimes vases, with contrasting bands of color. I suspect the inspiration for these pots came from some blue and white storge jars that my parents had. The bronze pigment on the rims sometimes runs dramatically. Avoid acids on the bronze pigment. Hand wash.

Hand-built Slab Pottery

These pots are assembled from slabs of clay joined together in wooden molds. The surfaces may be carved or left smooth. Colored slips are applied to the surface of some pots. Two distinctive styles are the ridgeline series which has ragged tops and the neolithic series which is inspired by a neolithic Chinese jade in the Metropolitan Museum in New York.

Bistro

French bistro is my favorite kind of food. Give me boeuf bourguignon or steak au poivre and I am a happy man. So many of the pieces I make on the wheel are made with this in mind. They are made relatively quickly, are intended for everyday use, and, I hope, have the warmth and generosity that I associate with those great little restaurants I used to enjoy when I was working in Paris.
